Surrealism

Surrealism is a cultural movement and artistic style that founded in 1924 by Andre Breton. The style uses visual imaginary from the subconscious mind to create out without the intention of logical comprehensibility. Andre Breton play an important part in the Surrealist movement and proposed to allegiance to folly, to dreams, to be incoherent and to be hyperbolic.

The movement started in Europe, centered of Paris. The movement attracted many members of Dada. One of the famous Surrealism artist is Salvador Dali.

Dali once said: "Picasso is perhaps a minor painter but he is the most destructive genius of modern times."

Dali's famous painting was the "Presistence of Memory".

The picture was seen as
  • Time is not rigid
  • Everything is destructible
  • Image was so suggestive of Einstein's theory of the relatively of time

In this project, I will focus on the artist Salvador Dali's early childhood biography. My selected 5 image title will base on Dali's childhood story.

1st image: Reincarnation

Salvador Dali born at 8:45am in 11th May 1904 in Spanish town of Figueras. The name Salvador was originally given to his brother who had died 3 years before Dali was born. He was always told that his brother reincarnated by him.

2nd image: Spoilt

Dali had a sister name Ana Maria. Before the arrival of his sister he was thoroughly spoilt and allowed to do almost anything he pleased.

3rd image: First step

His education began in a local school and then in the Academy in Figueras. Run by the Brothers of the Marist Order. To his Parents dismay, he was a poor pupil with the decision of him being an artist. In 1919 he started his own charcoal paintings and drawing exhibition in Figueras.

4th image: Characteristic

Dali is always consider a special kid as he always has the desire to do the exact opposite of what everyone else did assumed immense importance in his eyes and hours were spent dreaming up the most anti-social acts in order to astonish his schoolmates.

Dali enjoy torturing when he was young. He see these as art.

He pushed a boy over the bridge to the rocks some fifteen feet below, spent afternoon eating cherries on a rocking chairs as he watched the blood stained basins being brought from the bedroom.

he was given a wounded bat, he took the bat to his hiding place in wash-house. Next morning it lay, half dead, covered with frenzied ants.

He also took an inexplicable pleasure in throwing himself down steps. The pain was insignificant, the intense joy way overwhelming and he repeated the performance many times, perfectly aware of the effect it produced.

5th image: The Change

In 1921, Dali's mother died with breast cancer. It was the biggest shock in his life. He worship his mother a lot. His father than remarried his aunt (mother's sister). Some sources clain that Dali's resented this marriage while some claim that he didn't. Dali then moved out to stay in the school hostel and start his new life.
